In “Exactitude,” Calvino reads Leopardi, whose “search for the indefinite becomes the observation of all that is multiple, teeming, composed of countless particles” (60). Calvino uncovers this as a (to me, the) style of poetics rooted in a failure of comprehending infinity, instead grasping at it through an approximation found in and between specificities. This is where exactitude, for him, reveals some of its merit, later writing, “since the human mind cannot conceive the infinite, and in fact falls back aghast at the very idea of it, it has to make do with what is indefinite, with sensations as they mingle together and create an impression of infinite space, illusory but pleasurable all the same” (63). Exactitude is not poetic because it describes things accurately. In fact, there is a tension between precision and accuracy“One path goes into the mental space of bodiless rationality, where one may trace lines that converge, projections, abstract forms, vectors of force. The other path goes through a space crammed with objects and attempts to create a verbal equivalent of that space by filling the page with words, involving a most careful, painstaking effort to adapt what is written to what is not written, to the sum of what is sayable and not sayable. These are two different drives toward exactitude that will never attain complete fulfillment, one because "natural" languages always say something more than formalized languages can-natural languages always involve a certain amount of noise that impinges upon the essentiality of the information-and the other because, in representing the density and continuity of the world around us, language is revealed as defective and fragmentary, always saying something less with respect to the sum of what can be experienced.” (74-75).. Instead, exactitude, through its inevitable failure in all encompassing a complete description, highlights a lonely, beautiful nature of intersubjective, longing human experience.
In attempting to fabricate Calvino’s memo on consistency, I struggled to wrestle this bumpy, precise exactitude out of an LLM. I think it may not be possible. A computer program umwelt is not quite so poetic. Any concept of indefiniteness does not exist within the architecture of the machine. Programs compute or crash. The machine, as a result, occupies a turing-complete cosmology where everything is procedural and formalist, with nearly any state re-creatable through clever manipulation of cybernetic flows. So, understandably, AI outputs feel smooth and computable.
In the end, the memo was a decent forgery, making a cogent argument that felt stylistically related to Calvino’s other work. What it lacked, however, was a sense of volatile poetic grasping bubbling under the surface of the others. It was a statistical flattening of its inputs into a neat conclusion.
Interested in the specificities that undergird the output, rather than the statistical flatnessthat said, I have complex feelings on AI, I use it for many administrative tasks, as an attempt to reconstruct some of language’s associative volatility, I took a look at machine learning training text, thinking of it as the digital loam of human expression. The elements that make up Leopardi’s indefiniteness. Before being compressed and statistically analyzed, the dataset is home to exactitudes that make up the texture of communication and thought, rather than its analysis. Whereas the writer grapples with language and knows he cannot translate experience into structure perfectly, the computer does not encounter this slippage as a purely structured being.
I reverse engineered the LLM’s text into its constituent parts, finding the most similarThe program finds 500 candidate sentences with keyword search, then picks the best one using a weighted score led by embedding cosine similarity, plus topic blend, lexical overlap, style similarity, retrieval score, and prior-sentence cohesion, with penalties for low overlap/semantic match. sentence within a subset of 50,000,000 training sentences. It’s well-structured nonsense, but there is—in their adjacency—a sense of indefiniteness of language, the poetic breakdown (or excess) of meaning, especially in networked communication.

This was the Golden Age that, without coercion, without laws, spontaneously nurtured the good and the true. There was no fear or punishment: there were no threatening words to be read, fixed in bronze, no crowd of suppliants fearing the judge's face: they lived safely without protection. No pine tree felled in the mountains had yet reached the flowing waves to travel to other lands: human beings only knew their own shores. There were no steep ditches surrounding towns, no straight war-trumpets, no coiled horns, no swords and helmets. Without the use of armies, people passed their lives in gentle peace and security. The earth herself also, freely, without the scars of ploughs, untouched by hoes, produced everything from herself. Contented with food that grew without cultivation, they collected mountain strawberries and the fruit of the strawberry tree, wild cherries, blackberries clinging to the tough brambles, and acorns fallen from Jupiter's spreading oak-tree. Spring was eternal, and gentle breezes caressed with warm air the flowers that grew without being seeded. Then the untilled earth gave of its produce and, without needing renewal, the fields whitened with heavy ears of corn. Sometimes rivers of milk flowed, sometimes streams of nectar, and golden honey trickled from the green holm oak.The passage is a grammar of negation. No coercion, no laws, no ploughs, no swords, no cultivation—and yet the earth produces. Produces everything from herself. The strawberries, the blackberries, the heavy ears of corn, the honey from the holm oak. The easy operation results not in uniformity but proliferation. The consistency of the natural order, the earth faithful to its own generative grammar, does not produce monotony. It produces variety so abundant it reads like a catalog of gifts. The fields whiten. The rivers flow with milk. The honey trickles. Ovid, the poet of transformation and beauty, betrayed a longing for consistency. Not the plough that scars the earth into producing what the farmer demands, but the earth that produces from the integrity of its own composition. Jupiter's oak drops its acorns not because Jupiter commands it but because the oak is an oak. And Jupiter is Jupiter. The consistency is the root system. The abundance is what you see above ground. And the two are not different things but the same thing viewed from different positions. At the top of the tree, I confess the feeling is vertiginous. I have been carrying a map upside down. In my lecture on exactitude, I spoke of the reduction of secondary events to abstract patterns according to which one can carry out operations and demonstrate theorems. I realize now that I was already groping toward this value without knowing its name. The way a root reaches toward water through soil it cannot see. What I described then as a property of the precise sentence reveals itself now as something vaster: the principle by which a text's initial commitments propagate through every subsequent decision. Not as a presence that must be continually reasserted. As a gravity, invisible, bending the path of every note that moves within its field. Here, in America, I gained recognition by constructing fictions in which cities are held aloft not by mortar but by the rigor of the relations between their parts. Cities made of pure consequence, where the traveler finds not stones and fountains but the logic of a city's being—the residue left after every physical illusion has burned away. What kept those cities from dissolving into whimsy was consistency. In many ways, the cities contradicted one another ceaselessly. It was the consistency of the operations, however, that allowed them to be. The grammar of transformation that permitted each to generate the next by a process as rigorous as Euclidean derivation, however dreamlike the results. And here I must make a distinction that I think has not been drawn with sufficient care—between two things wearing the same name that are as different from one another as the living face is from the death mask. There is a meaning of consistency that is merely predictability. The consistency of the soap opera, the daytime serial, the feuilleton that extends its plot the way a tallow-maker extends a wick, dipping and dipping in the same wax. Each layer adds length without luminosity. In these works, consistency means only that tomorrow will resemble today, that the groove worn by the wheels will determine the path not because it is the best route but because departure would require an effort no one will make. This is not what I mean. Ovid's wax does something else entirely. In the fifteenth book of the Metamorphoses, Pythagoras:
Everything changes, nothing dies: the spirit wanders, arriving here or there, and occupying whatever body it pleases, passing from a wild beast into a human being, from our body into a beast, but is never destroyed. As pliable wax, stamped with new designs, is no longer what it was; does not keep the same form; but is still one and the same.Still one and the same. The wax of the feuilleton hardens around the wick. Ovid's wax is warm—pressed into forms it has never held, receiving new designs, and yet persisting through them, the way a melody transposed into a new key is recognized as the same melody because something has been preserved that is deeper than any single note. The soul passes from beast to human to beast. It is alive in each. The consistency is not what prevents change but what survives it. What I mean, then, is closer to the consistency of mathematical axioms. Euclid's five postulates, which do not predict the specific theorems they will generate but which provide the stage, the arena, the unbroken field within which an entire discursive world unfolds with necessity. The axioms are stable. The territory they generate is vast and surprising. Every text grows from such commitments the way a crystal grows from a seed. The seed does not contain the crystal, but the crystal is latent in the seed, folded into its molecular habits, waiting to unfold with all the ruthless specificity of something that was never a possibility but always a fate. Euclid began with five commitments so plain they seem beneath the dignity of mathematics—that a line may be drawn between two points, that all right angles are equal, and the fifth, which troubled geometers for twenty centuries the way a pebble troubles a shoe, that through a point not on a given line one and only one parallel may pass. From these, hundreds of propositions flowered. Each surprising at its arrival, inevitable in retrospect. With the necessity by which the almond tree produces almonds and not figs. Proclus, as quoted by Morris Kline:
This, therefore, is mathematics: she reminds you of the invisible form of the soul; she gives life to her own discoveries; she awakens the mind and purifies the intellect; she brings light to our intrinsic ideas; she abolishes oblivion and ignorance which are ours by birth. (Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times, 1972)I have always felt this about narrative. Not that the comparison flatters me, but that the story is already there, folded into its premises. My task is not invention but construction. The following of initial conditions with enough rigor and enough faith that consequences emerge on their own. A character's nature is a lattice that will accept certain bonds and reject others with the indifference of chemistry. A setting's physics—its hospitality to ghosts, whether time runs or pools—is another. The formal decision about who speaks and from what distance is a third: the window that creates the landscape by framing it, the mountain excluded from the frame ceasing to exist for the reader though it throws its shadow across everything the frame permits. These are axioms. They define the field within which events become possible. And within that field the possible is infinite—but not unconstrained. Infinity governed by rules is different from chaos. But Gödel demonstrated in 1931 something that arrives with the character of a curse in a fairy tale—a gift whose terms include the impossibility of ever understanding its terms. A system may be without flaw. Free from self-contradiction. Every derivation sound. And yet incomplete. Harboring truths it can house but not prove. Rooms whose doors it possesses but cannot open from inside. The way a dreamer possesses the exit from the dream but cannot find it because the searching is itself governed by the dream's logic. Certain ruins are more beautiful than the buildings they were—the absent roof admitting a light the architect never intended. Viollet-le-Duc, who spent his life inside Gothic cathedrals, restoring them:
Restaurer un édifice, ce n'est pas l'entretenir, le réparer ou le refaire, c'est le rétablir dans un état complet qui peut n'avoir jamais existé à un moment donné. (Viollet-le-Duc, Dictionnaire raisonné de l'architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle)A condition of completeness which may never have existed. The intact cathedral—every stone in place, every window glazed, every buttress bearing its intended load—may be less true to the building's consistency than the ruin, which has been edited by centuries into something the architect did not design but which his design, had he followed it far enough, might have produced. Viollet-le-Duc, again:
To restore a building is not to preserve it, to repair it, or to rebuild it; it is to reinstate it in a condition of completeness which may never have existed at any given time.
Chaque membre de la construction gothique est une force qui agit, et dont l'action est visible. Rien n'est inerte; tout concourt à l'équilibre par la résistance active de ses parties.Résistance active. Every rib, every pier, every flying buttress not resting but working. Exerting force against the force exerted upon it, the way two hands pressing palm to palm are motionless. The Romanesque wall stands the way a boulder stands—through sheer indifference to the forces around it. The Gothic vault stands the way a dancer stands—through continuous negotiation of opposing tensions, any one of which, if it ceased, would bring the whole structure down. The building is, at every moment, in the act of not falling. The text that leaves mysteries unsolved does not violate consistency but honors it. The axioms never promised to illuminate every corner of the field they generated. The darkness at the periphery is permitted. It is the shadow that gives the illuminated portions their depth. What the axioms forbid is the contradiction at the center—the door placed where the wall's logic forbids one, the corridor turning east when the geometry requires west. In Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener," a copyist in a Wall Street law office begins declining tasks:
Every element of a Gothic structure is an active force, whose action is visible. Nothing is inert; everything contributes to the equilibrium through the active resistance of its parts.
"I would prefer not to," said he.A small, unbridgeable distance between the speaker and what he has said. The sentence locates itself in a zone that is neither acceptance nor refusal. It does not oppose the law of the office. It does something worse—or better, or simply other. It hollows the language from within, the way a termite hollows a beam, the surface intact, the structure gone. And the formula spreads. The other clerks begin saying prefer. The narrator catches himself saying it. A low fever no one can account for, because the infection is not in any content—Bartleby has no argument, no position, no demand—but in the grammar, which has opened a door in a wall everyone had taken for solid. His tone is mild. His compliance is total. He has followed every rule so faithfully that the rules themselves have become visible—turned from glass one looks through into glass one looks at. And this visibility is fatal to their function. There is no elaborate conceit at work. No mythological apparatus. No supernatural intrusion. The conflict—excruciating as anything in the literature of the spectacular—is born entirely from within the structures of language. Bartleby has located an operation the field's architects never imagined. The way a chess player, having followed every rule with perfect fidelity, arrives at stalemate—the king unthreatened, every piece legally placed, and the game over. Not through violence but through the quiet discovery that the rules, pursued to their limit, permit a condition outside every category the game was designed to adjudicate. This is the perfectly cohesive narrative: one whose crisis is not imported but derived, generated from within its own axioms with the necessity of a mathematical proof. And the narrator flees. The reasonable man, the man of contracts and precedent, abandons his own office rather than inhabit the space Bartleby's consistency has opened. That consistency, when its field is complete, when there are no gaps through which the uncomfortable implications might escape, becomes something very close to unbearable. What Bartleby demonstrates is that the most compelling tensions need not be imported from outside the text's established structures. They can be generated from within. Born from pressing the structures to their limits without breaking them. The tension arises not from the violation of rules but from their scrupulous observance under conditions that reveal the rules to be stranger, more capacious, more volatile than suspected. Borges constructed, across thirty years of short fictions, what I can only call the purest laboratory of this principle. In "The Garden of Forking Paths," the sinologist Stephen Albert explains to Yu Tsun the nature of the novel composed by his ancestor Ts'ui Pên:
I looked at him steadfastly. His face was leanly composed; his gray eye dimly calm. Not a wrinkle of agitation rippled him. Had there been the least uneasiness, anger, impatience or impertinence in his manner; in other words, had there been anything ordinarily human about him, doubtless I should have violently dismissed him from the premises. But as it was, I should have as soon thought of turning my pale plaster-of-paris bust of Cicero out of doors.
In all fiction, when a man is faced with alternatives he chooses one at the expense of the others. In the almost unfathomable Ts'ui Pên, he chooses-simultaneously-all of them. He thus creates various futures, various times which start others that will in their turn branch out and bifurcate in other times. This is the cause of the contradictions in the novel. Fang, let us say, has a secret. A stranger knocks at his door. Fang makes up his mind to kill him. Naturally there are various possible outcomes. Fang can kill the intruder, the intruder can kill Fang, both can be saved, both can die and so on and so on. In Ts'ui Pên's work, d, both can die and so on and so on. In Ts'ui Pên's work, all the possible solutions occur, each one being the point of departure for other bifurcations. Sometimes the pathways of this labyrinth converge. For example, you come to this house; but in other possible pasts you are my enemy; in others my friend. Not chaos but a labyrinth. Which is to say: a structure. Which is to say: a consistency so vast it accommodates contradiction as one of its regular operations. The design is: all paths. This is not the same as no design. And then Albert is shot. The man who understood the labyrinth is killed by the man to whom he explained it—and the murder is itself one of the forks the labyrinth predicted. Even the bullet is inside the garden. "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" moves in a different direction. A planet invented by encyclopedists—its philosophy, its languages, its geometry, its history, all fabricated with the patience and rigor of a medieval scriptorium—begins to infiltrate the real:
Around 1944, a person doing research for the newspaper The American (of Nashville, Tennessee) brought to light in a Memphis library the forty volumes of the First Encyclopedia of Tlön. Even today there is a controversy over whether this discovery was accidental or whether it was permitted by the directors of the still nebulous Orbis Tertius. The latter is most likely. Some of the incredible aspects of the Eleventh Volume (for example, the multiplication of the hrihzir) have been eliminated or attenuated in the Memphis copies; it is reasonable to imagine that these omissions follow the plan of exhibiting a world which is not too incompatible with the real world. The dissemination of objects from Tli:in over different countries would complement this plan... The fact is that the international press infinitely proclaimed the "find." Manuals, anthologies, summaries, literal versions, authorized re-editions and pirated editions of the Greatest Work of Man flooded and still flood the earth. Almost immediately, reality yielded on more than one account. The truth is that it longed to yield. Ten years ago any symmetry with a semblance of order-dialectical materialism, anti-Semitism, Nazism-was sufficient to entrance the minds of men. How could one do other than submit to Tlön, to the minute and vast evidence of an orderly planet? It is useless to answer that reality is also orderly. Perhaps it is, but in accordance with divine laws—I translate: in human laws-which we never quite grasp. Tlön is surely a labyrinth, but it is a labyrinth devised by men, a labyrinth destined to be deciphered by men. The contact and the habit of Tlön have disintegrated this world. Enchanted by its rigor, humanity forgets over and again that it is a rigor of chess masters, not of angels. Already the schools have been invaded by the (conjectural) "primitive language" of Tlön; already the teaching of its harmonious history (filled with moving episodes) has wiped out the one which governed in my childhood; already a .fictitious past occupies in our memories the place of another, a past of which we know nothing with certainty-not even that it is false.
My dear brothers,
I must crave your pardon for not having written ere this...I spent Friday evening with Wells, and went next morning to see Death on the Pale Horse. It is a wonderful picture, when West’s age is considered; But there is nothing to be intense upon; no woman one feels mad to kiss, no face swelling into reality — The excellence of every art is its intensity, capable of making all disagreeables evaporate, from their being in close relationship with Beauty and Truth. Examine ‘King Lear’, and you will find this exemplified throughout; but in this picture we have unpleasantness without any momentous depth of speculation excited, in which to bury its repulsiveness — The picture is larger than ‘Christ rejected’. I dined with Haydon the Sunday after you left, and had a very pleasant day, I dined too (for I have been out too much lately) with Horace Smith, and met his two Brothers, with Hill and Kingston, and one Du Bois. They only served to convince me, how superior humour is to wit in respect to enjoyment — These men say things which make one start, without making one feel; they are all alike; their manners are alike; they all know fashionables; they have a mannerism in their eating and drinking, in their mere handling a Decanter — They talked of Kean and his low company — Would I were with that Company instead of yours, said I to myself! I know such like acquaintance will never do for me and yet I am going to Reynolds on Wednesday. Brown and Dilke walked with me and back from the Christmas pantomime. I had not a dispute but a disquisition, with Dilke on various subjects; several things dove-tailed in my mind, and at once it struck me what quality went to form a Man of Achievement, especially in Literature, and which Shakespeare possessed so enormously — I mean Negative Capability, that is, when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason — Coleridge, for instance, would let go by a fine isolated verisimilitude caught from the Penetralium of mystery, from being incapable of remaining content with half-knowledge. This pursued through volumes would perhaps take us no further than this, that with a great poet the sense of Beauty overcomes every other consideration, or rather obliterates all consideration.
Form growing ethereal as it is mastered—not heavier but lighter, not more constrained but more free, the constraints internalized so deeply they become invisible, the way the skeleton is invisible beneath the living skin and yet determines every movement the body can make. The mot juste is the one stone whose shape fills the gap in the arch. Aristotle saw the same principle in dramatic plot in Poetics:
What seems beautiful to me, what I should like to write, is a book about nothing, a book dependent on nothing external, which would hold itself together by the internal strength of its style, just as the earth, unsupported, holds itself in air, a book which would have almost no subject, or at least in which the subject would be almost invisible, if that is possible. The most beautiful works are those with the least matter; the closer expression comes to thought, the more the word clings to it and disappears, the more beautiful it is. I believe the future of Art lies in this direction. I see it, as it has developed from its beginnings, growing progressively more ethereal, from the Egyptian pylons to the Gothic lancets, from the twenty-thousand-line poems of the Indians to the effusions of Byron. Form, as it is mastered, becomes attenuated; it abandons all liturgy, all rules, all measure; it leaves the epic for the novel, verse for prose; it recognizes no orthodoxy and is as free as the individual will that produces it.

Of simple plots and actions, the episodic are worst. By “episodic” I mean a plot in which the episodes follow one another without probability or necessity. Such plays are composed by bad poets through their own fault, and by good poets for the sake of the actors: for in composing show pieces, and stretching the plot beyond its capacity, they are often forced to distort the continuity. Given that the mimesis is not only of a complete action but also of fearful and pitiable matters, the latter arise above all when events occur contrary to expectation yet on account of one another. The awesome will be maintained in this way more than through show of chance and fortune, because even among chance events we find most awesome those which seem to have happened by design (as when Mitys' statue at Argos killed the murderer of Mitys, by falling on him as he looked at it: such things seem not to occur randomly). And so, such plots are bound to be finer.
But you should know that even in the case of threatening words of intention to harm, or behavior attempting to harm another, punishment can be harsh.
